Since 1958, the Northwest Municipal Conference (NWMC) has been working to strengthen communities and enhance intergovernmental cooperation in the Northeastern Illinois region. As one of the premier regional councils of government in the nation, the Northwest Municipal Conference represents over 1.3 million citizens residing in forty-one (41) municipalities and one (1) township. The NWMC membership area covers over 300 square miles in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties.
The Northwest Municipal Conference serves the needs of local governments through a range of policy initiatives, programs and services that combine the resources of individual members for the benefit of the region’s residents. Our municipalities and townships are leaders in advocating on behalf of local government self-determination, regional planning, local control over local issues and employing a cooperative approach to address regional issues.
The NWMC, whose work is portrayed in this website, is governed by elected officials from each of its members. Under the leadership of seventeen (17) Executive Board members and a full board of its membership, the NWMC draws on the resources of twenty-eight (28) Committees, four (4) ad hoc committees, several subcommittees and its accomplished staff to focus on key issues and the provision of the most valuable local government services.
As the President of the Northwest Municipal Conference, I am proud to present this website to you. It comes with my sincere appreciation to all of the municipal and township members that have contributed to making this a very positive and influential organization. While we celebrate the achievements of the NWMC over the past fifty-three years, a great deal remains to be accomplished. Through the active involvement of its membership and continued focus of the needs of the region’s residents, the NWMC is well positioned to advocate on behalf of local government interests and the constituents we all serve.
