SPC purchasers can expect to pay the OPIS (Oil Pricing Information Service) price for the day of delivery, plus applicable taxes and profit margins. Savings vary depending on the performance of the OPIS index. Every municipality and government agency in the State of Illinois is authorized to participate in this program. Advantages of the Financial Fuel Hedging program include budget certainty and the potential to protect against inflated fuel prices during the spring and summer months. Interested participants need to begin planning now to secure pricing during January 2013, when publicly traded New York Mercantiel Exchange (NYMEX) contracts are historically cheaper than in summer and fall, when usage and demand is the highest.
