Transportation Priorities

Northwest Highway Bike Path
Palatine Road Reconstruction
Route 53 Extension
Yellow Line Extension
Metra STAR Line

Guided by the NWMC Transportation Committee and Board, the NWMC identified four strategies that will improve transportation and air quality throughout the region:

  • Expanding and improving transit service
  • Completing the existing highway network
  • Strategic improvements to the local arterial road network
  • Providing safe bicycle and pedestrian facilities

Directed by these strategies, the Conference updated our transportation priority projects list for 2009 to identify unfunded and underfunded projects in the NWMC region in anticipation of a state capital program (now passed) and a new federal transportation bill (pending).  The priority list is headlined by those projects identified as the top transportation priorities of the Conference:

  • Metra’s STAR Line, from O’Hare Airport to Hoffman Estates then south to Joliet.
  • CTA’s Yellow Line extension from Dempster Street in Skokie to the Old Orchard area.
  • The extension of Illinois Route 53 from its current terminus at Lake Cook Road through Lake County to I-94.
  • The reconstruction and reconfiguration of Palatine Road from Northbrook to Palatine.
  • A bike path paralleling Northwest Highway from Palatine to Park Ridge.

The complete list of projects contains other regionally or locally important projects and totals over $3.4 billion, demonstrating the far-reaching and multi-jurisdictional needs of the transportation network and illuminating the need for a comprehensive state capital program.
